Analysing Websites

What I Have Learned

From my research into the websites of popular artists and bands I have learned a lot about the codes and conventions of music websites and that bands/artists do not necessarily follow them. Many artists try to reflect their music in their websites image because it will attract to the same audience as their music does, an example of this is One Directions website where it is very colourful and packed which reflects their music style well. And also an example of this was The XX website where it was very bland and stripped back with a simple black and white colour scheme which shows their branding and music genre very well as they are quite a simplistic and calm band. From this website I have found that black and white colour schemes do look very good on websites and I will want incorporate some of this simplicity into my website.

The use of a key image was also very significant in attracting certain audiences and representing the artist/band in a specific way. A good example of this was Beyonce’s website as she had a very large picture of her in the background to attract a specific audience and create a specific feel to her website by using one main image.

The codes and conventions of these websites were very much used throughout most websites but there are a few artists/bands that choose to not follow the usual codes and conventions of music website. A good example of this that I found was the Red Hot Chili Peppers website where the whole look of the website was not as you expect from the bands music. The reason for this was that the colour scheme was very bland and with a picture of a fly holding a pill with the writing ‘I’m with you’ on it doesn’t really fit the image of a funk-rock band which shows a break in the convention.

I have learnt a lot about how music websites attract certain audiences and the first way is by the colour scheme for example bright colours will mainly attract a younger audience and black and white and dark themes will attract a more mature audience for example in Adele’s website where it is all black and white and gives off quite a sad vibe.

They key parts of website designs that I have found useful are the colour schemes, the layout, the key image and the relation to the artist and these are the most important parts of a music artists website that I have found and that I will keep in mind when creating my website.
