History of Music Videos - A Hard Days Night

The Beatles- A Hard Days Night was one of the earliest music videos made and there have been many noticeable changes to the way that music videos are made. Some main changes are:
•Editing- There are no fancy transitions or effects added to the video. The video is very basic and there are a lot of long takes. The only editing technique that was used was zoom , pan and tilt. In recent music videos there a lot of short takes and a lot of extravagant editing techniques to make it more interesting to watch.
•Props- There are not a lot of expensive props used and the scene is all natural as the video is shot in a city. There are a lot of extras used as crowds which are the main props whereas in recent music videos props are a main cost for example Michael Jacksons’ “Scream” cost $7 Million to produce.
•Camera Angles- All of the camera angles are quite simple and there is mainly a mix of close ups and long shots with the composition focused on the main band. Whereas in recent music videos camera angles are used a lot differently with a wide variety used.
Another main change in this music video to more recent music videos is that there is no relation between the video and the music. For example some music videos have routined dance moves that accompany the song and also the video with go with the beat of the song whereas the Beatles video doesn’t.

What I Have Learnt

From my research I have found out that music videos have changed a lot over time and recent music videos use bold eye catching colours which wasn’t available for music videos in black and white. This means that I should take advantage of this when making my music video and try to incorporate eye catching colours. Also I have found that the editing used in older music videos is very basic which is the opposite to recent music videos because of the advancement in technology. The music video by the Beatles was quite a low budget production which is what I will need to do rather than make an expensive music video like Michael Jacksons’ “Scream” which cost $5 Million to make.

My research also made me more aware of who my target audience is going to be. As I am a teenager I feel as though my target audience will also be teenagers and young adults. Also my music video will aim to attract both a male and female audience and therefore I will need to make sure that my music video doesn’t attract to just one sex.
