Music Video Analysis Part 2

Fat Boy Slim- Weapon of Choice

This video is completely performance based as the actor is dancing to the music. This is quite different from most music videos and therefore make it very interesting to watch. This goes against Goodwins theory that the artist should be in the music video as there is an actor doing all of the dancing and is the only person in the video.



The Verve- Bitter Sweet Symphony 

This music video is narrative and performance based there is a story of him walking and going past all of the people and also he is syncing on the way which makes it a performance based video also. This video agrees with Goodwins theory that the artist needs to be in the music video as the main singer of the band is the main person in the music video.



The Black Keys- Tighten Up 

Narrative based music video. I like this music video as it is a good narrative story throughout the whole song and uses good lip syncing the whole way through. This video supports Andrew Goodwins theory which is that the visuals, song and lyrics should link. It supports this because in the video the story is about a girl and the lyrics are also linked as you can tell by the lip syncing which make the video look a lot like a short film.



Bruno Mars- Grenade

This video is a narrative and performanced based music video as the story is of him pulling a piano to a girl and then it is also a performance as he is lip synching on the way. This also has the artist in the music video which proves Goodwins theory and also proves his theory were the visuals, lyrics and song link as the pace of the video is the same as the song and they link well together.



Is Tropical- The Greeks 

This music video is all narrative based because it is just some kids in warfare and there is no performance of the song involved. This goes against a lot of codes and conventions of music videos and the first is Goodwins theory as the song is not linked to the video. Also this goes against Altman's theory that the video should have a theme similar to the song which is doesn't really.




What Have I Learnt? 

From doing this task I have learnt about the differences between a narrative and performance based music videos. I have learnt about why music videos use these types of music videos, also I have learnt that some genres use mainly one type of video for example dance videos mainly use performance based videos because they will usually have a dance routine within the video.
